Refund Rhino · Amended returns
Missed something? Fix it the right way.
If you left off income, missed a credit, or chose the wrong filing status, an amended return (Form 1040-X) may be the way to correct it. A tax professional can tell you whether amending makes sense.
When amending may make sense
- Unreported income, such as a late 1099 or W-2
- A missed deduction or credit you qualified for
- Wrong filing status or dependents
When you usually don't need to
- Simple math errors, which the IRS often corrects
- A missing form the IRS has asked you to send by mail
- When the IRS has already sent a notice about the same issue. Respond to the notice instead.
Time limits apply. Generally, to claim a refund you must file within 3 years of the original filing date or within 2 years of paying the tax, whichever is later. Amended returns are processed separately and take longer than original returns; you can check status with the IRS Where's My Amended Return tool.
